Aquarium De nombreuses espèces sont élevées en captivité.
Description Principalement marin. Beaucoup des membres de cette famille vivent  dans la partie intermédiaire de l’eau saumâtres et douce. Répartition: régions tropicales et subtropicales de l’Atlantique, Indien et Pacifique. Nu ou avec des aiguillons courts dans le ventre. dents de la mâchoire fusionnées mais séparés par une suture médiane dans chaque mâchoire, donnant naissance à 4 dents fusionnées. Dentaries opposées et séparées prémaxillaires à la ligne médiane. Habituellement 7-18 rayons mous dorsaux. Rayons mous anaux habituellement 7-18. Modérément fourchue avec une nageoire caudale arrondie. Les rayons de la nageoire caudale principaux 10; ces poissons sont  Capables de se gonfler considérablement avec de l’eau. Atteint 90 cm de longueur maximale. Certains inhalateurs contiennent tetraodotoxin, surtout dans les viscères; dans les gonades de quelques espèces pendant la saison de frai. La législation communautaire européenne interdit le commerce avec des produits de poisson-globe.. Œufs démersaux sont pondus dans un nid protégé.
